EMAM has partnered with the government of Malawi through the Ministry of Labor to identify former miners who worked in South African mines throughout the 1970s and 1980s but who had not yet registered for their unclaimed social security benefits. They left the money unclaimed mostly because they were unaware that they had contributed to these programmes. More than 40 years after leaving the mining sector, ex-miners still struggle to receive their due compensation. EMAM campaigns for the portability of these benefits while standing up for their rights and working with a variety of SADC stakeholders. The association works with the funds indicated below to make the payments possible;

The Mines 1970 provident and preservation fund; During an exercise the association undertook between 2014 and 2016 in partnership with the ministry of labour since 2013, more than 53,000 former miners and their families registered. Only a small percentage of these individuals matched in the Mines 1970 benefits database, despite the fact that all of them matched in records showing that they worked at mines.

Since 2020, the Mines 1970 have been able to locate ex-miners in Malawi who are eligible to receive benefits through the Mines 1970. To date, 400 ex-miners have been located, and EMAM is tracking and tracing these ex-miners and helping them with the administrative process to receive the benefits, where 32 ex-miners have already received these benefits.

The Tshiamiso Trust; Following a landmark class action lawsuit in South African courts, the trust was created to compensate Mineworkers who performed risky labour in qualifying gold mines during the qualifying period, from 12 March 1965 to 10 December 2019. EMAM is currently working with the Tshiamiso Trust and a taskforce of the Malawian government to facilitate the reimbursements of ex-miners from Malawi who contracted TB and silica. Although this process is still in its early stages, the association is anticipated to take the initiative in ex-miners’ community mobilisation.
